Medicinforsøg = 'Elefantmanden'

A SINGLE tear rolled down the cheek of drug test disaster victim Ryan Wilson when his brother kissed him as he lay in intensive care.
The poignant moment was described by a relative as it was revealed that stricken Ryan, 21, and another human guinea pig may remain in comas for up to a YEAR.
They are the worst affected of six volunteers who suffered horrific reactions to new anti-inflammatory drug TGN1412.
Ryan’s sister-in-law Jo Brown said: “The only sign of life Ryan has shown in three days is when his brother William kissed him and a tear rolled down his cheek.
“He’s just lying there unconscious. It was heartbreaking to think he knew his brother was there and he could hear us. He’s suffered heart, kidney, lung and liver damage.”
Desperate medics have already tried every drug they hoped might be an antidote.
Jo went on: “Nothing has worked. We’re in uncharted territory. It’s devastating.
“Now we’re being told Ryan may be in this coma for six to 12 months. He can’t even breathe on his own.”
Trainee plumber Ryan had begged doctors to put him to sleep to save him from the searing agony of the drug.
He is on a life-support machine at Northwick Park Hospital in Harrow, North West London.
Ryan turned purple and his head swelled to three times its normal size after taking TGN1412, made by German drugs firm TeGenero.
Another victim, a 28-year-old man, was said to “look like the Elephant Man.”
Relatives believe the pair were given larger doses than four others less badly affected because they are big men.
They were all paid £2,000 each to take part in tests run by US research firm Parexel.
Witnesses said the six men began to show adverse reactions 15 to 20 minutes after being given the drug.
After around 40 minutes medical staff realised something had gone seriously wrong.
Victims were vomiting, writhing in agony and screaming that they felt their heads were about to explode.
Liver specialist Professor Roger Williams, who treated soccer legend George Best, said the drug may have made the volunteers’ immune systems “attack them”.
He added: “That is very serious. I’ve never heard of this happening before.”
Dr Ganesh Suntharalingham, in charge of the victims’ treatment, said the symptoms were “unique”.
He added: “We have to try to treat the inflammation with steroids and deal with the consequences of it.”
A relative of one victim said the volunteers took a “very small dose” of the drug.
He said: “Parexel told us the six men were given just 0.02 per cent of the maximum dose given to animals because it was the first trial.”
The drug was being developed to treat rheumatism, multiple sclerosis and leukaemia.
The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency said it may be weeks before investigators get results of lab tests which may reveal why the test went wrong.

Forsøgsperson? Hmmm

Medicinforsøg = 'Elefantmanden'
