Kan man hæve sin hæmatokrit til 50 eller 60 ved brug af epo, bloddoping, højdetræning eller ilttelt?

Thanks for using AllExperts. I am only somewhat familiar with these topics, but I can answer your question. Exogenous EPO has been used by unscrupulous athletes in the past to increase their hematocrit to improve cycling performance; it is by far the easiest way to raise one's hematocrit. Blood doping, altitude training, and altitude tents will also raise the hematocrit predictably, although somewhat to a lesser extent than EPO use. These measures, used together, can certainly raise one's hematocrit into the 50-60% range. It is even possible to have a hematocrit above 60%; people with the disease polycythemia, in which there is a proliferation of red blood cells, can have hematocrits above 70% if not treated. Values at this extreme end increase the viscosity of the blood and carry tremendous risks, however. There are multiple cases of fit, otherwise healthy professional athletes dying from heart attacks presumably (or definitely) linked to EPO usage: the high hematocrits that resulted from EPO usage led to increased blood viscosity, blood pooling, and cardiac failure because of the high blood viscosity. See the link below for an article on the subject. Thanks again for using AllExperts. http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2004/feb/16/cycling.cycling1
